Mighty Mule access control components are built around a few distinct control board families. The MM and FM series single and dual gate openers (MM271, MM371, MM572, FM200, FM350, FM500) share a common three-terminal accessory input for keypads and intercom integration, but the FM502 and newer smart-capable boards use a slightly different input configuration. The older RB741 and RB902 revolver-style openers are the exception: their accessory terminals sit in a different position on the board and need a short adapter harness that older models didn’t ship with. We keep these adapters on the truck because it’s a common gotcha. If you’re buying parts yourself, the control board model number is printed on a white label on the board itself, not on the motor housing or the arm. Photograph that label before you order anything. Signs Your Mighty Mule Access Control Installation Is Failing

• Keypad accepts the code but the gate doesn’t move. The keypad is transmitting, but the control board’s accessory input relay isn’t closing. This is usually the board’s relay, not the keypad.
• Gate closes on a car or person after a delay. The photo-eye signal that the board is reading has been lost, usually from a pinched wire at the hinge post or a dead emitter. The board defaults to closing on timer when it stops receiving the safety signal.
• Remote works but keypad is dead, or the reverse. One input path works and one doesn’t. The remote receiver and keypad feed the same board through different terminals, so this points to a single failed input, not the motor.
• Intercom buzzes or rings but doesn’t release the gate. The intercom closes a dry-contact relay on the access control board. If you hear the buzz but the gate doesn’t move, the relay is burned or the wire connection at the board has corroded.
• After a power blink, the keypad loses its codes. The board’s memory backup has failed. In West Hollywood’s heat, the small electrolytic capacitors on older MM boards dry out and the board reverts to default every time power cycles.

You can safely check two things without a technician: whether the keypad’s backlight comes on, and whether the photo-eye lenses are visibly cracked or clouded. Anything beyond that touches the control board’s low-voltage wiring, which is not dangerous by itself, but mis-wiring a 12V accessory into the board’s motor terminals or shorting the wrong pair can take out the board and leave the gate standing open. The boards run on modest voltage, but the gate itself doesn’t. If the access control fails while the gate is mid-cycle, you have a moving thousand-pound gate with no safety sensor in the loop.
